From the most basic steps to extremely advanced choreography, the five positions listed below are the very foundation to all movements in ballet. Diagrams of feet placement are provided to better visualize these ballet positions.
First Position – A stance in which the heels are placed together with legs rotated outward.

Second Position - A stance in which the feet are about shoulder width apart, heels facing each other, and legs rotated outward.

Third Position - A stance in which the heels are placed one in front of the other with legs rotated outward.

Fourth Position – A stance in which the feet are placed one in front of the other, separated by about one step’s length, with legs rotated outward.

Fifth Position – A stance in which the feet are placed one in front of the other, the edges of the toes of each foot touching the heels of the opposite foot, and legs rotated outward.
